Credit Unions help people struggling to get financial support elsewhere

A group of influential Scottish MPs will visit a Credit Union in South Lanarkshire later.

Members of the Scottish Affairs Committee will tour the South Lanarkshire Credit Union Network's office in Blantyre.

The MPs are currently examining government support for credit unions and the problem of financial exclusion in Scotland.

Credit Unions have been experiencing a boom as a result of the credit crunch.

SLCUN currently has 16,413 adult and 2, 980 junior saver members.

The MPs will hear how the network promotes credit unions and supports them in helping people who are financially disadvantaged, on low incomes or are limited in access to financial services.

The information gathered will form part of a wider report on poverty in Scotland.
