Boys as young as 12 have been reported to the procurator fiscal for carrying offensive weapons during a crackdown in North Lanarkshire. Strathclyde Police seized 145 weapons, including kitchen knives, baseball bats and a whip, and made 45 arrests during the month-long campaign. The crackdown was part of the force's year-long anti-violence strategy. Officers with metal detectors searched 2,000 people and 100 weapons were handed in to local police stations. A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said boys. some aged 12, in the Wishaw and Cumbernauld areas were found with weapons. The oldest offender was a 48-year-old man from Aidrie. Three women were arrested for carrying a weapon, including a 15-year-old girl in Shotts. Officers also worked in partnership with trading standards to warn shops of the dangers of selling knives to children.
