Pupils demonstrate against closure outside Corrie primary school
Islanders on Arran have called on their local council to withdraw proposals to close a community primary school.

North Ayrshire Council plans to shut Corrie primary school this summer and move pupils to Brodick primary are currently out to consultation.

Parents accused the local authority of using flawed information and rushing the plan before the Scottish Government tightens laws on closing rural schools.

North Ayrshire Council said the consultation period had been extended.

It will end in March.

Donna Gold, a former Corrie pupil, has two children at the school and another child due to start in August.

"Corrie primary school has been at the heart of the Corrie and Sannox community for more than 120 years," she said.

"It received an excellent report from HM Inspectorate two years ago praising its attainment."

"Why are North Ayrshire Council trying to close a first class, high performing school? It's madness."

The school has 15 pupils in two classrooms and a nursery.

Local campaigners said the council had failed to take account of new housing developments which they claimed would attract families.

Local resident David Boni said: "We need our school.

"Rural kids have a right to go to rural schools. We must keep the Corrie community alive."
