Mark Bradshaw was driving along the coast in Ayrshire when he came off the road after a sea surge at Skelmorlie.

Mr Bradshaw scrambled from his car window and said he was "lucky" to escape with only cuts and bruises.

Meanwhile, emergency services have been dealing with dozens of call-outs across the south west of Scotland.

Mr Bradshaw told BBC Scotland he was heading home through the severe overnight weather after working backshift.

The 34-year-old said: "Coming through Largs you could see the road was quite bad, with debris on the road and the waves were breaking over.

"As I drove along, there was a really big wave which broke onto the road and the car just aquaplaned and started to spin one way

"I corrected that, and then it gripped on the road again and it just span right round, hit into the fence and then went over down on the sea-wall.

"Fortunately the windows broke, the side window broke, so I climbed out of that - which was the uphill side by that time - and got out before the car got inundated or slipped down onto the beach even further than it was."

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said it had received 180 weather-related calls and attended 144 incidents overnight.

And a British Transport Police spokesman said a branch of a tree which had fallen onto the rail line near New Cumnock, Ayrshire, shattered the windscreen a freight train, showering the driver with glass.

No-one else was on board.
