New crime fighting agency leader
A long-serving police officer has been promoted to head of Scotland's top crime-fighting force.

Gordon Meldrum will take over as the new director general of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA) in the new year.

He replaces Graeme Pearson, who stepped down from the post last month.

Mr Meldrum has been deputy director at the SCDEA since June 2006 and was a Strathclyde Police officer for 23 years before joining the SCDEA.

His career has included several specialist roles with Special Branch and a secondment to the then National Criminal Intelligence Service.

He was the Scottish national co-ordinator for policing issues arising from the 2003 conflict in Iraq.

He also spent a year working with the Leadership Development Institute of the FBI at their academy in Quantico, Virginia, US.

Prior to moving to the SCDEA he was chief superintendent, divisional commander of Glasgow North and East Dunbartonshire Division within Strathclyde Police.
