Police will hand out Christmas cards in Glasgow city centre

Police officers in high visibility jackets will patrol the city centre during the month-long initiative.

Assistant Chief Constable John Neilson said: "Everyone will be out enjoying themselves ... by following a few simple steps they can stay safe."

His officers will target opportunist thieves and street crime.

Police said criminals take advantage during the festive season and they have issued the following advice:

• Keep in-car valuables hidden
• Look after your bags and belongings
• Keep cash cards and PINs safe
• Do not leave drinks unattended
• Make sure you are safe to drive the next morning
• Do not go wandering off alone, stay with friends.

The force said people should also plan ahead, ensuring they can get home safely.

Officers are training retailers to help them identify and tackle shoplifters.
