Handbag heroin courier imprisoned
William Long
William Long was caught with the drugs as he drove north on the A90
A drug courier has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after he was caught with heroin valued at 53,000.

William Long, 33, from Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of the drug.

He was caught by police on 20 July on the A90 Perth to Dundee road. The heroin was found in a woman's handbag.

Sentencing him at the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lord Clarke said Long should have learned his lesson from a previous conviction.

Mechanical fitter Long claimed he was undertaking the trip to wipe out a drug debt.

Advocate depute Keith Stewart said police had information he was driving north with drugs.

He was stopped near the Swallow roundabout and told officers heroin was in the car and his female passenger was not involved.

Defence counsel Jonathan Crowe said Long relapsed into taking drugs following his release from his last jail sentence and built up a drug debt of 200.
