Kerelaw abuse findings challenged

Kerelaw school closed last year after abuse claims
An employment tribunal challenging a council report stating there was widespread abuse at a residential school in Ayrshire has started.

Fourteen staff were sacked by Glasgow City Council and two were sent to jail after an investigation.

Kerelaw was closed last year after investigators found a "culture of physical and emotional abuse".

About 40 staff were said to have been involved. The council said others knew what was happening and done nothing.

The first employment tribunal, involving the school's former deputy head, Chris Johnson, 54, got under way on Monday.

He was not accused of abuse himself but argues he was unfairly dismissed for alleged management failings.

The tribunal heard from John Legg, head of performance management and strategic services at the council at the time, who chaired the initial disciplinary hearing.

He said Mr Johnson had shown poor leadership and failed to ensure staff met proper standards of care.

He told the hearing he had been concerned Mr Johnson seemed to side with a staff member rather than the children in his care, when that staff member had been accused of falsifying records of violent incidents.

At least three other cases are expected to be heard in the coming months.

Kerelaw was the biggest residential school for troubled teenagers in Scotland.
