Tens of thousands of children had grants to buy uniforms |
A grant of 47 to buy shoes and clothing for school was issued to tens of thousands of children in Scotland's biggest city during the last year. Figures, to be presented to Glasgow City Council's education committee, reveal that 32,731 grants were issued.
The local authority spent more than 1.5m on the awards.
John Dickie, head of the Child Poverty Action Group, said the figures showed there was a long way to go in tackling poverty in the city.
Mr Dickie also called for a review of the grant system to ensure it was consistent across Scotland.
He said many local authorities award more than 50.
Mr Dickie said: "There is a lack of consistency in terms of eligibility and the level of grant."
The footwear and clothing grant is awarded to children whose parents or guardians are in receipt of benefits.
These include income support, jobseekers allowance, council tax rebate, housing benefit and working tax credit.
Mr Dickie added: "These figures flag up the sheer level of poverty and show how far we've got to go to eradicate it."
The council report also shows 23,608 pupils received clothing grants and free school meals.
