Officers in Hamilton, Rutherglen and Cambuslang will take part

Officers in Lanarkshire will carry a digital camcorder on mobile patrol to record cases of street disorder.

Hamilton, Rutherglen and Cambuslang will be the focus of the six month trial project.

Camcorders are already used by Strathclyde Police for pre-planned operations and large scale events such as football matches.

Violent crime, vandalism and public disorder will be targeted by the scheme with one officer filming as their colleagues deal with the incident.

Superintendent Ian Callander, of Hamilton police office, said: "By using this project to target areas which we believe to be problematic, we hope to bring down the instances of anti-social behaviour and disorder that are occurring within them.

"Many people in communities that suffer from these incidents have a fear of crime and part of our aim over the next six months is to impact on this perception and reassure residents.

"Along with this, the scheme will enable officers to gather intelligence directly and provide evidence where needed."
