Drop out rates in Scotland have reached nearly 12% |
Students in Scotland are more likely to drop out of university than their counterparts in England and Wales, according to figures. The data published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (Hesa) said 11.6% of Scotland's students quit courses between 2004/05 and 2005/06.
The figure was 2% lower in England, while the rate was about 11% in Wales.
Universities Scotland said the country still had one of the world's lowest drop-out rates.
The umbrella body added that the gap was not surprising because more people from less well-off backgrounds went into higher education in Scotland.
The statistics showed that the University of Stirling was one of the best in Scotland for student retention, with only 2.8% of students dropping out of courses in their first year.
Principal and vice-chancellor Professor Christine Hallet said: "Our consistently high retention and completion rates are testament to the quality of the student experience at Stirling."
