The rusty bomb was found on a building site near the school |
A primary school in Dumbarton was evacuated following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb nearby. The device was found as work began at a new housing development in the Bellsmyre area of Dumbarton.
Staff and pupils at Aitkenbar Primary School were moved away and bomb disposal experts called in.
Police cordoned off the area and pupils were moved to nearby St Peter's Primary School where they remained for the rest of the school day.
The bomb was discovered by building workers at the site on Stoneyflatt Road at about 0830BST on Tuesday.
A 500m cordon was put in place around the building site as experts removed it for further investigation.
All shops within the area were closed and householders were advised to stay indoors. The bomb was taken to a local quarry where a controlled explosion was carried out.
A local woman said: "I work in Bellsmyre and we were still allowed to go about our business.
"Everyone has been quite calm but this certainly has been the talk of the town. The phones have been going mad when people heard about it.
School meals
"The children have been evacuated from the school and the area around the bomb. There has been a bit of disruption, as you would expect, but you can still get in and out of the general area.
"The emergency services have been very good and got everyone out of the area very quickly."
West Dunbartonshire Council said arrangements were in place for school meals to be provided for all pupils.
It said parents and guardians were kept informed regularly by updates on the website and on local radio.
