120m regeneration plan approved
The Gorbals, Glasgow
The Gorbals in Glasgow is an area under transformation
A 120m plan by former Celtic director Willie Haughey to transform a gap site near to his birthplace has been given the go-ahead by Glasgow City Council.

A 60 bedroom hotel, 600 homes and office space will be built in the site near to the Gorbals under the proposal.

It is estimated that the plan will create 2,000 jobs in what the council described as a vibrant quarter.

Another plan to demolish two tower blocks in the area and build almost 1,800 homes was also approved.

The proposal will complete the regeneration of the Gorbals area.

St Mungo Prize

The Laurieston Development Strategy will see the demolition of the two high-rise blocks at Stirlingfaulds Place in the coming months.

Work on the construction of the new homes is expected to begin early next year.

Retail, commercial and community facilities will also be built in the area.

Meanwhile, the council said Mr Haughey's proposal would "remove a large tract of derelict land which had been blighting the area for many years."

The businessman and philanthropist was recently honoured for his "distinguished service to Glasgow" and awarded the St Mungo Prize.
