Arrest is made over missing woman
Agnes Mechan

A man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance nearly five years ago of a Glasgow woman.

Police claim they have fresh information about Agnes Mechan, a credit agent in her sixties, who was last seen in August 2002.

A forensic search is now under way at a property in Jamieson Street, Govanhill, near to where she was last seen.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested, and held in custody. He is due to appear in court on Monday.

Known as Nessa to her friends and family, Mrs Mechan told her husband and three grown-up children she would be home in time to watch Coronation Street, but she never returned.

Her brother had died just weeks beforehand and police initially believed that the associated stress may have been a factor in her disappearance.

In December last year a BBC documentary - featuring interviews with her relatives - highlighted the case.
