Airport rail link 'will pitch in'
Glasgow Airport Rail Link
The rail link will cross St James' playing fields in Paisley
The future of the "biggest concentration of playing fields in west Scotland" on the route of the Glasgow Airport Rail Link has been secured.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport said 22 football pitches would be available in Paisley during and after construction of the proposed link.

New changing facilities will be built at St James' playing fields and a modern drainage system installed.

A spokesman for the local league said Christmas had come early.

John Lyle, general secretary of Paisley and District Amateur League, said: "I've been a member of this league for 50 years and can remember playing in the 1950s with nothing but a cold water trough outside the clubhouse.

"The Glasgow Airport Rail Link is the best thing that's ever happened to St James' playing fields."

Playing fields

During construction, 11 football pitches will be provided at St James' and 11 temporary pitches will be available elsewhere.

After construction, 20 pitches will be available at St James' and there will be two pitches at Ferguslie Park.

The future of the playing fields was secured during a meeting between Renfrewshire Council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

The plan is expected to be ratified by Renfrewshire councillors on 14 December.

MSPs will vote on whether to give the rail link the go-ahead on Wednesday.
