Gordon Ramsay has worked to raise money for spina bifida

The Scottish Spina Bifida Association Centre in Cumbernauld will provide training, recreational and support services for more than 3,000 people.

Mr Ramsay, the charity's patron, said: "The association ensures a child's specialised needs are met throughout their life."

The centre includes a tele-medicine suite to allow support from consultants irrespective of location.

Andy Wynd, chief executive of the association, said: "The complex medical problems associated with spina bifida, hydrocephalus and other related conditions result in frequent hospital appointments with families travelling great distances across Scotland.

"This is very disruptive to family and school life, creates financial pressure and results in increased anxiety and stress for all involved.

"The facility will enable skilled medical staff based in hospitals across the UK to have a virtual clinic."
