Work under way on 100m hospital
The New Stobhill Hospital will open in 2009

Construction work on a 100m hospital in Glasgow is under way.

The new Stobhill hospital, in the north of the city, will cover four floors and an area equivalent to the size of five football pitches.

It will treat about 400,000 patients each year when it opens in 2009, according to the Scottish Executive.

The Stobhill site will include a Marie Curie Hospice, an inpatient mental health service for young people and a new secure care centre.

It will provide a number of specialist health services such as cardiology, renal dialysis and gynaecology.

Professor Sir John Arbuthnott, chair of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "The development of the new hospital is at the heart of plans to transform the Stobhill site and ensure it remains one of the city's key health locations for decades to come."

Stobhill will serve patients from north and east Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire.
