Alan McDonald speaking to Ivor Birnie during the peace march |
Church leader and peace campaigner Alan McDonald has visited the Faslane nuclear base during a 10-day stay in Dumbarton. The moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland took part in last month's peace march from the base to the Scottish parliament.
Mr McDonald, who is a strong opponent of nuclear weapons, spent about an hour at the base and met personnel.
He also met anti-nuclear activists at the nearby peace camp.
Mr McDonald said his trip was a pastoral visit, focusing on the people who work at the base.
"Faslane is the largest employer in the area and it is only right
that I should include it in my programme while I am in the Presbytery of
Dumbarton," he said.
"I think that most people are well aware of the Church of Scotland's stance in opposition to the Trident missile system, and to my own strong personal support of that position."
