Scott Harrison travelled to Spain to train for a forthcoming bout |
A legal team is working to release world champion boxer Scott Harrison from a Spanish jail. The boxer, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, is being held in Malaga following his arrest on 6 October.
He was detained by the Guardia Civil for allegedly trying to steal a car and assaulting a police officer.
Mr Harrison's management said he had done nothing wrong and hoped to secure his release "within the next 24 to 48 hours". His legal team is out in Spain.
The fighter had been training abroad and was due to return to the ring on 9 December in London.
'Language barrier'
His father Peter flew out to see him as soon as he heard about the incident and maintains his son is innocent
Manager Barry Hughes claimed his fighter was innocent and being held unlawfully in Spain.
He said the arrest came about as a result of a language barrier problem.
A spokeswoman for the Guardia Civil in Malaga was unable to say when Harrison would be released from the jail or face another court hearing in Spain.
The boxer pulled out of his last fight in Belfast in May at two days notice because of depression and alcoholism issues which saw him check into the Priory clinic.
He said last month he intended to stay out of Scotland ahead of his December fight against former European champion Nicky Cook by preparing at a training camp in southern Spain to escape media attention.
In September police charged Harrison with six offences including three of assault and one of fraud following "a number of incidents" in South Lanarkshire earlier this summer.
