Hafeez Anwar, 34, told the High Court in Edinburgh that Zeeshan Shahid placed a black bin bag on the ground, burst it open and set fire to the items inside.

He told the court it happened on the same day it is alleged that the 15-year-old was killed in March 2004.

Mr Shahid's defence lawyer accused Mr Anwar of hating his client.

Pregnancy shame

Defence QC Norman Ritchie claimed that about five years ago Zeeshan Shahid had made Mr Anwar's sister pregnant.

He said: "The truth is, you decided to tell stories about Zeeshan Shahid to get even with him for a number of reasons, isn't that right? Because of your sister's pregnancy?"

Mr Anwar denied all knowledge of the pregnancy.

He agreed that he did not like Mr Shahid but insisted that the story he had told in court was the truth.

Zeeshan Shahid, 28, his brother Imran Shahid, 29, and Mohammed Faisal Mushtaq, 27, all deny the abduction and the racially aggravated murder of Kriss Donald.

Mr Anwar, a self-confessed drug dealer, told the court how he was asked to buy petrol and then met up with Zeeshan Shahid - known by his nickname of Crazy.

A black bin bag was split open and clothes and fawn boots inside were doused with petrol and set on fire, he said.

Mr Anwar made a statement to police after they kicked down the door of his then home in early May 2004 and found cannabis and �1,100 in cash.

He rejected suggestions that he only began speaking to police after the raid in a bid to take the heat off himself.

The trial continues.
