A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death when he tried to break up youths during what police described as a disturbance. John Purcell, of Millennium Gardens, Easterhouse was attacked at about 2235 BST on Saturday as he walked home. He died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Det Insp Tom Docherty said: The community are shocked. Mr Purcell was trying to do the neighbourly thing and disperse youths."
Police said there was an altercation in Easterhouse Road before the attack.
An incident room has been set up at Easterhouse police office.
Elsewhere, a 41-year-old man was seriously assaulted twice by a youth in what police said was an "unprovoked" attack in the Cardonald area.
Police said the victim was attacked as he got out of his car near his home in Allanton Drive at about 0030 BST on Sunday.
The youth chased the man into Carham Drive, where he attacked him again.
The victim was treated at the Southern General Hospital for face and back injuries.
His condition is serious but stable.
