MSP bid for Monklands campaigner
Monklands hospital
Julie McAnulty will stand as an independent MSP
A campaigner opposed to the downgrading of Monklands hospital is to stand as a candidate in next May's Scottish Parliament elections.

Julie McAnulty has announced she will stand as an independent on a platform to prevent Monklands losing its accident and emergency unit.

More than 50,000 people signed a petition against plans to close the A&E department at the hospital in Airdrie.

Lanarkshire Health Board's decision was ratified by the deputy health minister.

Ms McAnulty, who is a full time carer, also expressed her opposition to the use of Private Finance Initiatives to build NHS hospitals.

In the last Scottish parliament elections Dr Jean Turner was elected after standing as on the single issue of saving emergency services at Stobhill hospital in Glasgow.

However changes to that hospital went ahead as planned.
