An application for homes near to Loch Awe has been approved
The first developments to use forests for affordable housing under a new scheme have been announced.

The National Forest Land Scheme allows housing organisations to purchase land from Forestry Commission Scotland at a reduced price.

Four applications have now been approved in Dunoon, Loch Awe, Sunart and Mull.

Schemes must maximise use of timber and ensure affordable houses are built in areas of greatest need.

Deputy Environment Minister Rhona Brankin said: "There is a recognised shortage of affordable housing in many rural areas.

"The demand for retirement or second homes has pushed prices beyond the means of many local people."

Some 15 homes will be built at the new schemes and will be offered for a mixture of rent and low-cost ownership.

Deputy Communities Minister Johann Lamont said: "Initiatives like this allow families to continue to live and work in remote areas, supporting key industries such as tourism and forestry."

She said the Scottish Executive was committed to delivering affordable homes in rural areas and Communities Scotland would be spending 120 million this year.
