 Australian officials want indigenous remains to be returned |
The Australian Government has asked Scotland's largest local authority to return the remains of six Aborigines held in its museums collection. Glasgow City Council will consider on Wednesday the request to "repatriate indigenous Australian human remains".
If approved the human remains will be returned to the Torres Strait Islands.
A report said the six remains "were donated to Glasgow Museums by various people and as far as can be ascertained have never been displayed".
The request was made in November 2005 by the Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination.
The office is a government agency responsible for returning indigenous Australian remains held overseas to their communities.
A report to go before the council's culture and leisure services committee on Wednesday recommends the remains are returned to Australia.
