Hector had to be helped out after plunging through the ice while on a walk

A 15-stone Great Dane has been rescued after falling through the ice at the Water of Leith in Edinburgh.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service was called out to fish the dog, called Hector, from the water.

They secured a line to the land, broke through the ice and retrieved the animal.

The rescue took place at about 1000 GMT in Redbraes Grove. The dog's owner took it to the vet for a precautionary check-up.
