Daniel Simonsen won the So You Think You're Funny award |
Norwegian funnyman Daniel Simonsen has won the So You Think You're Funny award for the best new comedian. The deadpan comedian wins 5,000 and a chance to appear at the Montreal "Just for Laughs" Comedy Festival. The awards, which were devised by Edinburgh's Gilded Balloon comedy venue, have been running for 21 years. Previous winners of the competition include Peter Kay, Dylan Moran, Rhona Cameron, Lee Mack, Tommy Tiernan, Miles Jupp and Rob Rouse. About 400 fledgling comedians, who had been performing stand-up for less than a year, entered the regional heats of the competition earlier in the year. More than 50 comics made it through to the seven showcase events during the Edinburgh Fringe. Karen Koren, director of the Gilded Ballon, said Simonsen had won because "he has funny bones". She said: "All the finalists were fantastic, it just happens that Daniel was a little bit different. We couldn't decide, so the judges voted democratically."
