Scots stand-up wins Fringe award

Scottish stand-up comedian Janey Godley has been named winner of this year's Nivea Funny Women Fringe Award.

The Glasgow comic won with her show "Domestic Godley", in which she gives home truths about family, friends and her domestic skills.

The �1,000 award was established last year to highlight the imbalance of female winners in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival's mainstream awards.

The runners up were "Angry Puppy" and "Pippa Evans and other lonely people".

The awards were presented by Christina McKelvie MSP at the Pleasance Dome on Monday evening.

'Challenging situations'

She said: "Women's humour has played a significant role in Scotland's cultural identity over the generations.

"Scottish women who have faced challenging situations in their everyday lives have often survived poverty and oppression because of their humour."

Lynne Parker, producer of the awards, said: "We have been at the vanguard of delivering new female comedy talent to eager audiences across the UK for six years.

"This is our opportunity to reward and promote talented women at the Fringe."

Domestic Godley runs until 25 August at the city's Pleasance Theatre.
