 David Malouf has won awards for poetry, fiction and autobiography |
Australian Novelist David Malouf is to visit Edinburgh after being awarded the Muriel Spark International Fellowship. Malouf is the second author to be offered the Scottish Arts Council Fellowship, following in the footsteps of Margaret Atwood. His visit will include a "Meet the Author" at a special Edinburgh International Book Festival event to be held at the end of September. Malouf has won awards for poetry, fiction, autobiography, and drama. His work has strong Scottish resonances and includes the novels Remembering Babylon and The Great World. He said: "'I look forward, immensely, to being in Scotland for a time and will discover in it, as I have on past occasions, a kind of 'homecoming'." Scottish Arts Council head of literature, Dr Gavin Wallace, said: "The Muriel Spark Fellowship extends and enriches Scotland's strong traditions of international literary exchange by bringing leading world writers to Scotland to concentrate on their work, and to partake of the life of the literary community and encourage reciprocal inspiration. "We are deeply honoured that David Malouf has accepted the 2008 Fellowship. "He is truly one of the world's finest writers, and one with a strong insight into Scottish writing, past and present, and the subtle inter-relations between Scotland and Australia. "We have much to learn from his great breadth of achievement and interests, and he will be warmly welcomed." Catherine Lockerbie Edinburgh International Book Festival, director, said: "I'm delighted that David Malouf, truly one of the world's great writers, is returning to Scotland. "I have been a passionate admirer of his work for decades, and invited him to the Edinburgh International Book Festival in my first year as director in 2001." In a special Edinburgh International Book Festival autumn event, Malouf, will be at the Traverse Theatre on 23 September.
