No joke for wigless Fringe clown

A �500 wig which was originally made for actor Pete Postlethwaite when he played Scaramouche Jones has been stolen from an Edinburgh Fringe show.

The seven-year-old prop, used to play an old clown called Scaramouche, was taken from the Assembly Rooms.

The play this year is to be performed by the show's writer Justin Butcher and it was from his dressing room that the wig went missing on Saturday.

The wig has been replaced using a smaller, adapted one.

The hairpiece had been described as "priceless" and is crucial to elements of the play, but despite a massive search of the building the production company have been left with no leads.

They are now offering free tickets as a reward to anybody with any information on the wig's whereabouts.

Guy Masterson, who is producing and directing the performance, told the BBC Scotland news website: "There are three key elements to a clown's persona - their wig, their nose and their shoes.

"Take any of those elements away and you destroy them."

Scaramouche is on at the Assembly Rooms, Supper Room, at 1220 BST daily until Monday 25 August.
