Protestors secure council meeting

Home care protest (generic)
Campaigners have been protesting against the charge since last year

Senior social-work officials have agreed to meet protestors who forced a council meeting to be abandoned.

The campaigners, many in wheelchairs, chained themselves together and began shouting slogans in the main chamber of Fife Council on Thursday.

After attempts to restart the meeting failed, Provost Francis Melville called the meeting to a close.

The head of social-work has written to the group, Campaign Against Charges, inviting them to discuss their worries.

Protestors mounted a campaign against Fife Council's plans to increase the charge to people who receive homecare support.

Assessments are due to be carried out by the authority, but the campaigners have demanded to know exactly how they are being assessed.

Social work chief Stephen Moore is also preparing to brief councillors on the progress of assessments.

An update was not expected to be published until September but, following expressions of concern from some Labour members, an interim briefing will be published on Friday.
