Potholes and pavement cracks can cause accidents |
Edinburgh's cracked roads and pavements have cost the city council 2.8m, a new report reveals. About two people a day have lodged claims with Edinburgh Council over the last 10 years, with a further 2.4m outstanding claims.
A council spokeswoman said 85% of road repairs were as a result of work by utility companies which "poorly reinstate" holes dug to fix pipes.
The news follows a report detailing public liability claims in Edinburgh.
An Edinburgh City Council spokeswoman said a total of 7,126 people had lodged public liability compensation claims with the council since 1996.
She said: "The council does its utmost to ensure that pavements and roads are in the best possible condition for pedestrians and drivers.
"As the figures show, public liability claims fluctuate year on year, and while we strive to deal with each one as soon as possible, each case is different from the next.
"Some take longer to resolve than others through the council's claims-handling agents and, if required, through the legal process."
