Figures for drug-driving double
Campaign launch
Fife Constabulary have launched a Christmas drink-drive campaign
The number of people found to be driving while on drugs has doubled in Fife, according to the police.

Figures showed that 46 drivers were found to have taken drugs in the last 12 months compared to 24 last year.

Traffic officers have said the increase is partly down to more people tipping them off about a friend or family member getting behind the wheel.

Fife Constabulary has launched its Christmas drink-drive campaign with an extra emphasis on catching drug users.

Public information

Information from the public has led to 70% of the drug-drivers being caught, according to the head of Fife's roads policing unit.

Insp John McDonald said: "Whilst the figures for drug driving are on the rise, I am delighted that so many of them were detected owing to information supplied by the public.

"We have considerable intelligence surrounding those who drive whilst impaired and the message is that we are catching them in higher numbers than ever before and will continue to do so".

The campaign urges people to inform police of anybody they suspect may be driving after having taken drugs or alcohol.

Out 'in force'

Officers have also pledged to continue testing people who show signs of being incapable of driving.

The age group which appears to be continuing to drink and drive the most is the under-25s, according to the figures.

But the police have warned that almost three hundred young people in Fife lost their licences this year as a result.

Insp McDonald added: "Drivers should be in no doubt that officers in large numbers throughout the force will be out to detect and deter those who can ultimately end up in a road crash, losing their life or killing a friend."
