Labour denies school closure plan

The plans led to protests from parents and children.
Labour politicians have denied drawing up a hit list of schools to be closed in Edinburgh and then backing down because of pending elections.

Addressing the council's education committee, members insisted the future of schools was only a discussion point.

The Liberal Democrats had accused Labour of "breathtaking hypocrisy" for attacking the closure plan.

It was formally drawn up by the Lib Dem and SNP coalition which took control in May but the SNP then withdrew support.

Withdrawing support

More than 20 schools had been earmarked for closure by Edinburgh City Council, including 13 primary, three secondary schools and six nurseries.

Parents and pupils at some of the highlighted schools organised high-profile demonstrations against the threatened closures.

In September, the SNP dramatically announced that it was withdrawing its support for the review of education services, leading to the plans being shelved.

However, council leaders warned that the issue had not gone away and that the topic of mergers was likely to resurface next year.
