Hundreds waited for trains at Inverkeithing station.

Engineers have been working to try to fix the cabling problem, on a stretch of track between Markinch and Ladybank.

It led to major disruption to rush hour services. Many trains were cancelled with some replacement bus services being operated.

Network Rail said the problem was found at 0600 GMT and trains should now be starting to return to normal.

One commuter at Inverkeithing said: "Trains were arriving already full. We had to just watch them pulling in and then pulling off again leaving us still standing on the platform."

Passengers were unable to board trains which were already full.

First ScotRail, GNER, and Virgin Trains services in and out of Edinburgh were disrupted because of the fault.

Some passengers travelling later in the morning were able to catch a bus between certain stations.

Repair work was completed shortly after 0900 GMT but disruptions were expected to continue for most of the morning.
