Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson kicks off work at Straiton

The Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson cut the first sod at the site of the new Straiton Park and Ride.

The 600 space car park on the A710, south of the city bypass, will offer drivers a free, parking space and quick access into the capital by bus.

A terminal will also be built as well as a CCTV, landscaping, cycle and pedestrian facilities.

Regional transport authority, the South East of Scotland Transport Partnership's (Sestran) is working with Edinburgh Council on the project.

Mr Stevenson said: "Straiton is a key transport artery for Edinburgh and this new park and ride facility is absolutely vital."

Sestran chairman Russell Imrie said it would offer commuters from Penicuik, the Scottish Borders and the surrounding area a real alterative to driving.

Phil Wheeler, Edinburgh Council transport convener, added: "With 50,000 new residents moving to Edinburgh and the Lothians within the next 10 years, and one-third of the city's workforce commuting from outside the city to get to their jobs we must provide practical solutions for drivers."
