The number of people who have travelled across the Forth by hovercraft has broken through the 25,000 barrier, the service's operators say. The two-week trial of the service is to end this weekend and Saturday's sailings are already fully booked.
The passenger service between Kirkcaldy in Fife and Portobello in Edinburgh was launched to try to assess demand.
Operator Stagecoach said the response to the service had been way beyond what it had envisaged.
The introduction of a priority booking hotline for early morning commuters saw numbers double, while tourists have queued to get on board later in the day.
'Further discussion'
A spokesman for Stagecoach said it was too early to judge whether there was a business case for a full-time service.
The results of detailed questionnaires will have to be analysed before a decision is made.
He said there would be further discussion as to the best route and the best means of crossing, although the operators were very pleased with the performance of the hovercraft.
The craft sailed in a force six gale, conditions in which the operators said a small ferry would not have coped.
