Morris Petch was jailed after failing to turn up for sentencing |
A convicted sex offender who went missing after failing to turn up for sentencing has been jailed. Morris Petch, 50, was convicted last week of raping two young girls in Edinburgh in the 1990s.
He was due to be sentenced on Friday, along with two others involved in the paedophile ring, but failed to appear.
Following his re-arrest on Saturday, Judge Lady Leeona Dorrian ordered Petch to be kept behind bars until his risk to others was assessed.
Caroline Dunsmore, 43, and John O'Flaherty, 50, both pleaded guilty to sex abuse against one of the girls.
Lord Malcolm had been due to consider sentencing all three as soon as Petch's trial was finished, but on Friday he called for background reports on Dunsmore and O'Flaherty.
They were both granted bail.
Petch, who did not call to be bailed, will remain in prison until all background reports on him are completed and an assessment of his risk to others is complete.
On Tuesday, defence advocate Gail Gianni said Petch apologised for failing to appear in court and commented that her client had "taken fright" because of the difficult situation he found himself in.
