Drivers at the Livingston depot will strike for three days

The action is expected to hit food and other supplies to nearly 100 Tesco stores across the country.

Up to 150 drivers, all members of the Transport and General Workers Union, will stage the walk-out from Thursday 24 May to Saturday 26 May inclusive.

The dispute erupted when Tesco revealed plans to move its depot by 500 yards.

As part of the relocation process the company said it would re-draw terms and conditions for those working at the Livingston distribution depot.

Tony Trench, T&G regional industrial organiser and spokesperson for the drivers, said workers were angered by the conduct of the supermarket.

He said: "What makes this situation worse is that before Tesco had started a meeting with us and national officials in London, they told the Livingston drivers what the final outcome would be.

"That revelation was the final flashpoint for the drivers and confirmed we are dealing with a cynical company which cannot be trusted."

The union staged a ballot of members in April over the issue in which 92% of drivers took part, with 95.5% in favour of strike action.

Disrupt service

The total number employed in transport at the Livingston site is over 200 but the dispute affects the drivers only.

A spokesperson for Tesco said the company would be working hard to ensure disruption to customers was limited.

He said: "We are naturally disappointed by this decision.

"Put simply, all we are doing is changing the way we pay our existing staff - not what we pay them.

"We will work hard and do everything in our power to ensure that the actions of a minority of staff will not disrupt the service we provide and cause inconvenience to our customers."
