An impression of the new stadium planned for Sighthill

Councillors will be asked next week to support detailed plans for both projects, including an athletics and rugby stadium at Sighthill.

An overhaul of the city's Commonwealth Pool is part of the plans.

A proposed sell-off of Meadowbank Stadium would help meet the costs of the �86m project.

Jim Inch, Edinburgh Council director of corporate services, said: "These projects represent a vision to transform sporting provision in the city.

'World class'

"The intention is to build facilities which will inspire the present and future generations to participate in sport.

"They will provide modern facilities for public recreational use and excellent competition venues for hosting national and international events in a variety of sports."

Councillor Donald Anderson, Edinburgh Council's sports and culture leader, said: "We are going to end up with an international-class sports stadium, a world-class swim centre and diving facility, and a brand new sports complex for the east of the city.

"Taken together, this represents the biggest ever investment in new sports facilities for the city."

Edinburgh Council's full council meeting is to be held on Thursday.
