Plans for trams in Scotland's capital could be back on track after opposition parties joined forces to demand that the scheme should go ahead. The SNP administration is concerned that the project and the Edinburgh Airport rail link proposals do not represent value for money.
Labour, the Tories and the Lib Dems will vote in unison to support them at the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday.
Ministers have indicated they may not be bound by parliamentary votes.
The position of the three parties was set out in a parliamentary amendment, ahead of a Holyrood debate on transport.
It has set out a position to back the trams project, approved in the last parliament, but with a cap on government cash support.
It has also called on ministers to sort out problems with the airport rail link, identified by Scotland's spending watchdog, before final financial commitments are made.
The government motion in the debate, which faces certain defeat, notes the SNP's election pledge to scrap the two Edinburgh projects - as well as plans for an additional Forth crossing.
