Outside drinking by-law in force
Teenage drinking
Drinkers flouting the law face a 500 fine
A new Edinburgh by-law restricting outside drinking has started as part of a campaign to reduce anti-social behaviour in the city.

The rules, which were put into force on Monday, make it an offence for anyone to drink in public if they are asked to stop by police.

Anyone refusing to stop drinking could be arrested and fined 500.

Police have however agreed not to stop people drinking peacefully in the streets, parks and squares.

The by-law will cover the whole of the city.

The 27 by-law bans already in place in Scotland cover more than 480 towns and villages, and the built-up areas within the cities of Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen.
