Drivers are being warned of what could happen if they are caught |
A 14-year-old boy was among 13 drunk motorists to be caught during a crackdown on dangerous driving in Fife. The teenager was stopped in a stolen vehicle in the West Fife area. He is the third 14-year-old to be reported for drink driving this year.
The boy was among five males and one female under the age of 25 and seven men over 25 to be caught by Fife Constabulary in a week.
The statistics come from the first week of the blitz.
Fife Constabulary's Insp John McDonald said he was alarmed that not only had an underage driver been caught behind the wheel but he had been over the drink drive limit.
He said: "We would urge parents to be aware of where their children are as this situation is clearly a danger to these youngsters and everyone else on the road.
"It is only the start of the campaign but we are encouraged that the numbers of drink drivers caught are down on last year."
'Life and death'
Inspector McDonald said he welcomed the numbers of people who come forward with information.
"This could literally make the difference between life and death.
"Our campaign this year is one of the biggest we have ever mounted.
"Using analysis and intelligence we are targeting drink driving hotspots and the people we know are drinking and driving on a regular basis.
"Our message is simple, risk it, and you will be caught. It's far simpler and safer to make alternative travel arrangements this festive period."
The campaign also features a hard-hitting poster with a bloody beer glass and the message "One drink Can be One Drink Too Many", radio adverts and a DVD which will be played in pubs and clubs around Fife.
