Forth bridge wire breaks detected
Forth Road Bridge
Forth Road Bridge cables are being monitored
Three wires have broken inside the Forth Road Bridge's main suspension cables in the past three months, a new monitoring system has found.

The first results of the cable monitoring scheme have been reported to the Forth Estuary Transport Authority (Feta) board.

Bridgemaster Alastair Andrew said it was too early to draw conclusions.

The listening device was installed after inspections last year uncovered the scale of the corrosion problem.

The bridge authorities are hoping to remove moisture from the cables by injecting dry air in an effort to prevent further corrosion.

Health check

It is hoped to appoint a company next month to install the system, with work getting under way next spring.

Two of the latest breaks were detected in the west cable, with the other in the east cable.

Mr Andrew said: "Continuous monitoring gives us the comfort of an ongoing health check into the condition of the cables.

"Given the extent of the breaks we identified from our internal inspections last year, these results confirm what we suspected, but it is certainly too early to draw any specific conclusions from the data."
