The SNP want to target Polish residents living in Edinburgh |
The SNP are targeting Polish residents living in Edinburgh using a leaflet campaign in a bid to win their votes. The party launched a new SNP leaflet in a number of languages for EU Citizens.
The leaflets highlight their right to vote in both the Edinburgh Council and Scottish Parliament elections in May 2007.
Steve Cardownie, Edinburgh deputy lord provost, said: "There are over 20,000 Poles in the capital, not to mention people from other EU countries."
He added: "The vast majority of them are not aware that they have the right to vote in next year's elections for both council and parliament.
"In the capital the SNP are trying to engage with our local Polish, and other, communities to make sure that they too get the representation they deserve and are made fully aware of their rights."
SNP Candidate for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh, Kenny MacAskill MSP agreed raising awareness within Edinburgh's European communities was vital.
He said: "Regardless of the languages they speak all of the citizens of Edinburgh have the right to have their voices heard at the ballot box.
"The people who have come to Scotland from other parts of the EU have displayed the dynamism and hard-work that we in the SNP are looking to match in Government."
Leaflets have been produced in Polish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Catalan, and a Dutch version will be able shortly.
