The funeral of a soldier from Edinburgh who was killed in Afghanistan will be held in the capital on Friday. Corporal Mark Wright, of the 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment, died after a routine patrol entered an unmarked minefield in Helmand province.
The 27-year-old tried to save the life of a fellow paratrooper who was injured in the minefield but was killed in the explosion on 6 September.
Commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Tootal commended his "bravery".
Cpl Wright, who lived in Edinburgh with his fianc�e Gillian, joined the Army in January 1999.
Mortar fire
After completing the basic parachute course at RAF Brize Norton, he was posted to the 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment.
In his first three years he completed three tours of Northern Ireland and was deployed to Iraq in May 2003.
Back in the UK, he was promoted to corporal, working as a mortar fire controller and was deployed to Afghanistan in that role in May 2006.
The Ministry of Defence said Cpl Wright performed a vital role in operations across the province and was continuously in the field conducting high intensity operations right up to his death.
