Bogus charity collectors warning
Police are warning people in Kirkcaldy to be on the lookout for bogus charity collectors.

The warning follows several incidents in recent weeks in central Kirkcaldy, where people have called at doors asking for sponsorship money.

Charities have confirmed that they are not carrying out any door-to-door collections or sponsorship campaigns in the town.

Police are urging people to ask for an ID card from unexpected callers.

Several incidents

PC Colin Steer, Fife Constabulary's community safety officer, said: "Over the past few weeks there have been several incidents in central Kirkcaldy.

"Hoax callers have visited houses pretending to collect money for various charities.

"It has been confirmed by the charities that they are not carrying out any charity drives in the Kirkcaldy area and are not involved in any door-to-door collections or sponsorship campaigns."

He added: "We have already detected five people for this type of crime but I would still urge residents to be vigilant and double-check the credentials of any caller before handing over cash.

"It makes sense to check the identity of any unexpected caller and if in doubt don't let them into your home, but contact the police.

"Always use a door chain or a door bar, and if you don't have these security devices, get one fitted."
