The event will also feature journalist George Alagiah, Rachel Elnaugh, star of BBC TV's Dragons' Den and political satirist and writer Armando Iannucci.

Historian Dan Snow, star of BBC TV's Battlefield Britain, will also attend.

Last year almost 3,000 people attended the first Festival of Politics, based at the Scottish Parliament.

Publication on Monday of the programme for this year's event came just days after Sir Sean Connery announced he was pulling out of his planned appearance at the festival.

The Edinburgh-born star was angered by comments from the parliament's presiding officer, George Reid, who had been due to interview him on stage.

Mr Reid annoyed Sir Sean when he said he would ask him tough questions, including his views on violence against women.

The four-day festival will take place from 23 to 26 August.

Sir Menzies will talk about life in politics and his political vision.

Retired MP Mr Dalyell will revisit the West Lothian Question, the issue he first raised some 30 years ago.

Mr Reid said: "Almost 3,000 people attended our first award-winning festival last year.

"This time, with events during the evenings and on Saturday, as well as during the working week, we hope that even more people can enjoy the Festival of Politics.

"This year the festival offers an even greater number of events, broadening the opportunity to engage with topical issues and to discover that politics is for everyone.
