Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas has received an award of a different kind after being honoured with a degree from St Andrews University. The film star brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to the Fife town as he received a Doctorate of Letters for his contribution to British film.
Douglas, 61, wore the traditional black graduate's gown and white bow tie for the Wednesday ceremony at Younger Hall.
He was accompanied by his wife, Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones.
Douglas blew a kiss to the assembled graduates after having his honorary degree conferred by university principal Brian Lang.
He had appeared slightly nervous earlier as he sat on the stage, but clapped vigorously as students received their degrees.
During her laureation address, Professor Dina Iordanova of the university's school of modern languages-film studies, said Douglas was "one of the finest modern actors".
"Michael Douglas has had many roles and in all of them he excels," she said.
Businessman Sir Tom Farmer, the founder of Kwik-Fit, was also honoured at the ceremony, where he received a Doctor of Laws.
He shook Michael Douglas' hand and joked by blowing several kisses as he stood up to have his honour conferred.
Charlie Sifford, one of the pioneers of African-American golf, will receive a Doctor of Laws from St Andrews University on Thursday.
Mr Sifford, who was having a look around the Old Course on Wednesday, said he was "delighted" with the honour.
