Call for probe into cycling film
Graeme Obree
The Flying Scotsman is based on the career of Graeme Obree
A union representing unpaid crew from the film The Flying Scotsman is calling for an investigation into the movie.

The film follows the story of cyclist Graeme Obree who won the world championship on a bike made of washing machine parts.

Its premiere marked the start of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) on Monday evening.

The company behind the film went into administration last year, leaving many of the crew unpaid.

Unpaid crew

The technician's union Bectu has called for the Scottish Executive's Culture Committee to launch an investigation into the handling of the project.

In particular they are concerned about the use of public money from Scottish Screen.

Bectu stopped short of picketing the opening night premiere.

It said they had more chance of securing payment if the film is a success and secured a distribution deal.

World premiere

The film festival refused to comment on the dispute.

The film, starring Johnny Lee Miller and Billy Boyd, held its world premiere at Cineworld, Fountain Park.

Hollywood leading ladies Charlize Theron and Sigourney Weaver, and veteran actor Sir Sean Connery are among the big names on the bill at the festival.

Earlier in the day it was announced that the event would receive 250,000 in extra funding.
