| Friday, 20 October, 2000, 16:44 GMT 17:44 UK Council seeks exams cash ![]() Bill Morton wants a slimmer management structure A second Scottish council is set to seek compensation of 96,000 for extra costs incurred as a result of the Scottish exams chaos. Aberdeenshire Council wants 6,000 for each its 16 secondary schools affected. Education officials believe the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) has not appreciated the extra work incurred by schools in resolving the problems. Highland Council was the first to withhold money from the SQA in protest at the exams chaos. Aberdeenshire Council says administrative staff are having to channel much of their time into co-ordinating and managing the appeals procedure. At a meeting next Thursday councillors will be asked to sanction a letter to the senior chief inspector of schools, Douglas Ostler, demanding the compensation payments. In a report to the Scottish Parliament's education committee inquiry into the chaos, Bill Morton, the interim head of the SQA, revealed a series of flaws within the organisation. He outlined proposals for a pared down management structure in the wake of failings he has already identified within the SQA operation as part of his ongoing review. |
